India to bring back overstaying nationals from US, MEA says “We are against illegal migration”

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday outlined the country’s firm stance against illegal immigration, citing its links to organized crime. Official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that Indian nationals who are overstaying or residing illegally in foreign countries, including the United States, will be repatriated if they can prove their nationality through proper documentation. Jaiswal highlighted that the Indian government is committed to facilitating the return of its citizens who are living abroad without valid immigration status, provided the necessary documents to verify their nationality are shared.

While addressing inquiries about the specific number of individuals being repatriated from the United States, Jaiswal stated that it was premature to discuss numbers. He emphasized that such repatriations would be carried out in accordance with established protocols, and the government will take action based on the verification of each individual’s nationality. The spokesperson further explained that the process of verifying nationality is critical to ensuring the legitimacy of the repatriation efforts.

Jaiswal reiterated that India’s position on illegal immigration remains clear and resolute. The Indian government opposes illegal migration due to its association with organized crime, which poses a significant threat to national security. The spokesperson underscored that illegal immigration is a matter of serious concern for India, and the country will continue to address this issue through diplomatic channels and in alignment with international law.

The spokesperson also addressed concerns about potential impacts on trade relations between India and the United States in light of the US’s crackdown on illegal immigration. Jaiswal made it clear that discussions about the repatriation of illegal immigrants from the US would not affect the strong trade and industrial ties between the two nations. He explained that illegal migration and trade are distinct issues, and India’s policy on illegal migration remains separate from its trade and economic engagements with the US. The two countries have established multiple mechanisms to handle trade matters independently of immigration issues.

Jaiswal further elaborated that the ongoing discussions regarding the repatriation of illegal immigrants would be managed according to established agreements and with due consideration to the legal requirements for verifying nationality. The process would be in line with international norms for repatriation and the protection of individual rights.

The MEA spokesperson also addressed protests in the United Kingdom, specifically those related to the movie Emergency, starring Kangana Ranaut. Protests organized by certain Sikh groups have led to disruptions of screenings in cities such as Birmingham and Wolverhampton. The groups claim the film is anti-Sikh, resulting in cancellations of shows in various cinemas. Jaiswal stated that India has consistently raised concerns with the UK government about the disruption of public events by anti-India elements and the need for the UK to take necessary actions to safeguard freedom of expression. He emphasized that the Indian government expects the UK to uphold the principles of free speech while holding individuals accountable for obstructing it.

In addition, Jaiswal reiterated that India would continue to monitor the situation closely and expects that the UK will address such disruptions to prevent future incidents. He expressed concern over the growing trend of violent protests and intimidation by elements that seek to undermine India's interests abroad, urging the UK government to take stronger action to prevent such occurrences.
